Between the Santa Ynez mountains and the Pacific Ocean sits La Cumbre Plaza, an open shopping area in Santa Barbara, California. The place offers wonderful weather, while the buildings are inspired by the historic mission heritage of the region with a style of Arts and Crafts. According too the main walkway, shapes and flower-filled planters form an attractive setting, where folks can rest and drink together.

The Hahn Company first built La Cumbre Plaza, which was their first property. Later the shopping centre passed into the hands of Macerich. The main stores of the plaza are Macy’s and the grocery store Vons, while other stores held anchor roles at various moments in the history of the centre, but like many others, they ultimately closed.

An important thing to note here… La Cumbre Plaza went through heavy change in tenants over the years. What once was an active, separate open shopping area, saw many store closures.

A competing centre across the way now attracts more steady foot traffic today. However the plaza stays with an active list of stores and restaurants, and it still attracts folks that want an open shopping experience.

On a more positive note, the Local Art Walk adds artistic life to the area. It happens every month on the third Friday evening, showing works of local painters and giving the plaza a dynamic, community character. Besides those regular art walks, pop-up stores appear sometimes around the property, local makers and seasonal vendors take turns, which makes shopping more special and personal than a typical store trip.

Food forms another draw. The restaurant Attract set up here and received good attention at its opening. Also, many other food spots are available, from full-service restaurants to casual fast service.

Shops like Tiffany & Co. And White House Black Market strengthen the upscale feel of the place. For extra help, concierge services andtext messages help visitors with any question.

Although La Cumbre Plaza does not have that same big energy as before, the mix of open shopping, social events and food choices still makes it a good spot to visit in Santa Barbara.
